Adobe Reader 9 is available. Should I install it?

Adobe Reader 9 does not support the Adobe PDF eBooks available at this site. In order to use Adobe PDF eBooks, you must have Adobe Digital Editions or Adobe Reader 6 or 7 installed.

Adobe Reader 8 is available. Should I install it?

Adobe Reader 8 does not offer stand-alone support for Adobe eBooks. Rather, Adobe Reader 8 works in conjunction with an application called Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) for the download and use of Adobe eBooks. Adobe Digital Editions includes much of the functionality previously provided by Adobe Reader with a simpler, easier to use interface.

If you use Adobe Reader 6 or 7 to transfer Adobe eBooks to your Palm or Pocket PC you should not install Adobe Reader 8/Adobe Digital Editions at this time. If you use downloaded Adobe eBooks on multiple computers, the destination computer must be running Adobe Reader 6. Please note that Adobe Reader 6 is no longer available for download. If you wish to use borrowed Adobe eBooks on more than one computer, you should not upgrade to Adobe Digital Editions or Adobe Reader 7 or 8 at this time. Additionally, please note that JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to install Adobe Digital Editions. Click here for instructions on enabling JavaScript in your web browser.
  2. Under the 'Download and Install' heading, click 'Install Adobe Digital Editions'.
  3. Click 'Install' to begin installation of Adobe Digital Editions.
    The 'Adobe Digital Editions Installer' screen is displayed.
  4. Click 'Yes' in the 'Adobe Digital Editions Installer' screen to begin the download of Adobe Digital Editions.
    The 'Adobe Digital Editions License' screen is displayed.
  5. If you accept the terms of the license agreement, continue installation by clicking the 'I Agree' button.
    Adobe Digital Editions is installed.
  6. Adobe Digital Editions opens and installation is complete.

    The 'Download new and previous versions of Adobe Reader' screen is displayed.
  2. Complete 'Step 1 of 2' by selecting your 'Operating System', 'Version', and 'Language' from the dropdown menus. If you have Windows Vista, select 'Windows XP SP2' as your Operating System.
    The 'Download new and previous versions of Adobe Reader' screen expands to display 'Step 2 of 2'.
  3. Complete 'Step 2 of 2' by selecting the version of Adobe Reader that you wish to download and click the 'Download Adobe Reader' button. Be sure to uncheck the items listed under 'Also download' if you do not want to download them.
    Your browser prompts you to open or save the file.
  4. Browse to (and make note of) a location to save the file you are preparing to download. Click the 'OK' button to download and save the Adobe Reader install file to your machine.
    Please be patient, as this file may take a few minutes to download and save.
  5. When the download is finished, locate the file in the location to which you saved it. Double-click the file to start the installation process, then follow the prompts to complete the process.*
    If a message is displayed alerting you that 'another application is set to view PDF files' on your computer, be sure to choose Adobe Reader 7.x as the default application for opening PDFs.
    Once you have stepped through the prompts, the 'Adobe Reader - Setup' screen displays the status of your installation, and indicates when the installation has finished successfully.
  6. Once installation is complete, click the 'Finish' button to exit the 'Adobe Reader - Setup' dialog box.
  7. If desired, open Adobe Reader from the shortcut on your desktop.
    Note that when you open Adobe Reader for the first time, the 'Adobe Reader - License Agreement' is displayed.
  8. To use Adobe Reader, accept the terms of the license agreement by clicking the 'Accept' button.
  9. If desired, you may delete the .exe file once you have completed the installation process.

* If you cannot install the file immediately, you may cancel the installation process and install later by double-clicking on the .exe file that you downloaded.

Activating Adobe Digital Editions

Adobe Digital Editions can be activated anonymously, or by using an Adobe ID. Anonymous activation automatically occurs the first time that you open a DRM-protected Adobe eBook. Anonymous activation allows you to read DRM-protected eBooks on your computer only.

Activating Adobe Digital Editions using an Adobe ID allows you to read DRM-protected eBooks on your computer and prepares your copy of Adobe Digital Editions for the future use of functionality currently unavailable in Adobe Digital Editions, such as transfer to portable devices.

When you first open Adobe Digital Editions 1.5, you are prompted to activate, or authorize, your computer.

To authorize your computer using an Adobe ID…

  1. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
    The 'Setup Assistant' dialog box is displayed.
  2. Click 'Continue'.
    The 'Authorize Computer' screen is displayed.
  3. In the appropriate fields, enter the email address and password for your Adobe ID.
    If you do not already have an Adobe ID, click 'Get an Adobe ID online' and follow the instructions to sign up for an Adobe ID.
  4. Click 'Activate'.
    Your computer is authorized to your Adobe ID.
  5. Click 'Finish' to close the 'Setup Assistant' dialog box.

If you prefer not to authorize your computer using an Adobe ID…

  1. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
    The 'Setup Assistant' dialog box is displayed.
  2. Click 'Continue'.
    The 'Authorize Computer' screen is displayed.
  3. Select the 'Don't Authorize Computer' option.
  4. Click 'Activate'.
  5. You are prompted to confirm that you do not want to activate your computer at this time. Select 'Continue' to continue without authorizing your computer.
  6. Click 'Finish' to close the 'Setup Assistant' dialog box.

If you choose not to activate your computer at this time, you may do so later.

To authorize your computer at a later time using an Adobe ID…

  1. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
  2. Select Library > Authorize Computer.

  3. The 'Authorize Computer' dialog box is displayed.
  4. In the appropriate fields, enter the email address and password for your Adobe ID.
    If you do not already have an Adobe ID, click 'Get an Adobe ID online' and follow the instructions to sign up for an Adobe ID.
  5. Click 'Activate'.
    Your computer is authorized to your Adobe ID.
  6. Click 'Finish' to close the 'Setup Assistant' dialog box.

Activating Adobe Reader 7

In order to read digitally protected PDFs, (like the Adobe eBooks found at this site), using Adobe Reader 7, you will need to activate your copy of Adobe Reader.

There are 2 types of activation:

If you are using Adobe Reader 7…

  1. While connected to the Internet, double-click the Adobe Reader icon to open Adobe Reader.
  2. From the Adobe Reader menu bar, select File > Digital Editions > Authorize Devices.
    Your browser will open the 'Adobe DRM Activator Site' web site.
  3. Follow the instructions at this site to activate your copy of Adobe Reader.

Currently, up to 6 machines (Windows, Macintosh, and/or supported PDAs) may be activated to the same Passport account. Please note that transferring Adobe Reader eBooks from one computer to another using Adobe Reader 6 or 7 will work only if the destination computer is running Adobe Reader 6.

Note that Adobe Reader 8/Adobe Digital Editions do not currently support transfer to Palm or Pocket PC devices or the sharing of borrowed eBooks among multiple computers. Adobe Reader 6 or 7 may check for updates and download Adobe Reader 8 automatically depending on your current settings.   3. Complete 'Step 2 of 2' by selecting the version of Adobe Reader that you wish to download and click the 'Download Adobe Reader' button.
    The .dmg installation package will likely be saved to your desktop.
  4. Double click the .dmg file to retrieve the Reader .pkg file.
  5. Double click the .pkg file to save the Adobe Reader install file to your machine.
    Please be patient, as this file may take a few minutes to download and save.
    When the download is finished the .pkg file window opens.
  6. Double-click the .app file to start the installation process, then follow the prompts to complete the process.*
    Once you have stepped through the prompts, Adobe Reader is installed. When installation is complete, Adobe Reader opens.

  5. Click 'Activate'.
    Your computer is authorized to your Adobe ID.

Activating Adobe Reader 7

In order to read digitally protected PDFs, (like the Adobe eBooks found at this site), using Adobe Reader 7, you will need to activate your copy of Adobe Reader.

There are 2 types of activation:

If you are using Adobe Reader 7…

  1. While connected to the Internet, double-click the Adobe Reader icon to open Adobe Reader.
  2. From the Adobe Reader menu bar, select File > Digital Editions > Authorize Devices.
    Your browser will open the 'Adobe DRM Activator Site' web site.
  3. Follow the instructions at this site to activate your copy of Adobe Reader.

Currently, up to 6 machines (Windows, Macintosh, and/or supported PDAs) may be activated to the same Passport account. Please note that transferring Adobe Reader eBooks from one computer to another using Adobe Reader 6 or 7 will work only if the destination computer is running Adobe Reader 6.

Note that Adobe Reader 8/Adobe Digital Editions do not currently support transfer to Palm or Pocket PC devices or the sharing of borrowed eBooks among multiple computers. Adobe Reader 6 or 7 may check for updates and download Adobe Reader 8 automatically depending on your current settings. Click here for information on turning off automatic updates in Adobe Reader 6 and 7.

Please note that Adobe Reader 6 is no longer available for download. If you upgrade to Adobe Digital Editions or Adobe Reader 7 or 8, you will no longer be able to reinstall Adobe Reader 6.
